Bold & Beautiful, a gut renovation in Murray Hill, New York

A couple who loves to cook, eat and entertain felt cramped in their current one bedroom unit and bought a bigger square footage apartment in the same building. They are fun, bold, love color and are not scared to commit, (well the husband is), but the wife has a way with her smile. The biggest transformation here was the change in the existing closed kitchen into an open concept kitchen with storage for everything. The amount of functional intention in this kitchen will work for this new family of four for years to come. I cannot wait to see them baking together on this island. Photography by the trusted Daniel Wang.

First look into this bold and unique kitchen. It has unique cabinetry colors, of course all custom; we chose a sage green for the perimeter cabinets and a deep aubergine color for the island. They have storage for everything from sauces and cereal to countertop appliances and muffin pans. Custom pull-out recyling and trash are housed in the window storage along with a pop up outlet for the food processor.

The existing galley kitchen was opened up fully, the hardest part, to create a fully open concept living for this family who loves to cook and entertain. The custom kitchen island has a beautiful fluted detail on the back which makes for great view from the great room. The backsplash is a travertine tile in a large format and almost feels like a slab.

This shot shows the custom millwork detail… the fluted back, the side of the island which is similar to the perimeter cabinets, the quartz hangs beautifully over the island. All stainless steel appliances talk nicely to the brass hardware and the beautiful faucet with a lovely silhouette. The materiality in the kitchen with the brand new oak floors look fresh and inviting.

This arch takes you into the kids en-suite… the playfulness of this architectural detail and how we decided to paint the inside the same color as the kitchen island unifies the center of the home with the entry of the home. Its my client’s favourite spot in their new home.

Custom millwork include radiator covers, storage for toys and a desk for the parents as they care for the siblings.

The kids bathroom which will double up as the guest bathroom as well continues the aubergine story. We have bold purple tile paired with a custom finished vanity. Polished nickel plumbing fixtures bring some sparkle to the space!!

Wide angle shot of the bathroom shows the purple till paired with the light oak fluted tile as an accent tile above the tub and on the floor. It creates a spa like feeling in the kids bathroom which otherwise can feel playful with the bold color. Functional checks for the niche in the back for daily essentials and hooks for the hooded towels to hang!!

While the kids bathroom was purple the primary bathroom was sage green with a bold black penny tile for the floor including the curb, beautifully executed and a graphic accent tile.
